- 2024.05.13
“I just graduated from a foreign university. Can I find a job in Japan?”
“I’m a recent graduate from college and I’m considering starting up a new company in Japan, is it possible?”
If you are in a similar situation, it may please you to learn that it is indeed possible in Japan.
This time, we will introduce the visa for this purpose: the Japan System for Future Creation Individual Visa, also known as J-Find.
What is J-Find?
Japan System for Future Creation Individual Visa, also known as J-Find, is set by the Japanese government to attract excellent young people worldwide.
As Japan faces population decline, Japanese society is expecting to have an increasing labor shortage in the future.
Thus, in April 2023, the Japanese government created the Japan System for Future Creation Individual Visa(J-Find), which allows recent graduates from famous universities worldwide to prepare and start their careers in Japan.
This visa is limited to recent graduates from top universities worldwide, and there are some other restrictions.
However, once approved, this visa allows its holder to find a job or create startups, or activities to prepare for the former two activities.
What are the requirements?
To be recognized as a “Future Creation Individual”, the applicant is required to fulfill all of the following three requirements:
- Graduated from a university ranked in the top 100 in two or more out of the three world university rankings, or conferred a degree or professional degree after completing a graduate course at one of those universities.
Here, the three rankings are:
(1) QS World University Rankings published by Quacquarelli Simmons
(2) THE World University Rankings published by The Times
(3) Academic Ranking of World Universities published by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy)

- The applicant graduated from the school mentioned above within 5 years
- Possession of 200,000 yen or equivalent foreign currency for living expenses at the beginning of the stay.
What are the permitted activities?
Once a J-Find visa is approved, the visa holder can:
- Job hunting
- Start-up preparation activities
- Employment to supplement the funds necessary to carry out the above activities
…with a maximum period of 2 years (renewal required for every 1 year or 6 months).
*Note this came be used along with other similar visas like Designated Activities (Continued Job Hunting), the Project to Promote Foreign National Entrepreneurial Activities, the Project for Facilitation of Acceptance of Foreign Entrepreneurs in National Strategic Special
Zones, Designated Activities (Start-up Activities after Graduation), etc., as long as the total period of stay does not exceed the 2-year limit.
Additionally, the spouse and children of the holder of this visa can get a status of residence of “Designated Activities”(spouse of J-Find, etc.) and can accompany him/her to Japan.
However, they must apply for “permission to engage in an activity other than those permitted by the status of residence previously granted” if they want to work in Japan.
Once the visa holder finishes his/her job-hunting or start-up activities within the 2-year period, he/she can change to a Working visa or a Business Management visa suitable to his/her activities.
